Chichen Itza Generals:
Deep within the jungles of Mexico, in the Yucatan peninsula, three hrs driving from Cancun and two from Merida lie the mysterious temples and pyramids of the probably the best-known of the classical civilizations of Mesoamerica, the Maya. They rose to prominence in southern Mexico, Guatemala, northern Belize and western Honduras. These amazing people had mapped the stars, evolved the only true writing system native to the Americas and were math masters. They invented the calendars we use today. Without metal tools, beasts of burden or even the wheel they were able to construct vast cities across a huge jungle landscape with an amazing degree of architectural perfection and variety. Their legacy in stone, remains in a spectacular fashion at places such as Chichen Itza, Palenque, Tikal, Tulum, Copán and Uxmal. Piste is a small town located 2 km away from Chichen Itza archaeological site. There are hotels and Mexican restaurants here as well as stores and a number of craft market vendors. Piste tends to be the location many backpackers use to stay at while visiting Chichen Itza.
