Amazing Isla Mujeres
This idyllic, tropical island is girdled by magnificent reefs and the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea.

isla mujeres
Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, Mexico

In 1517, a Spanish expedition led by Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba landed on Isla Mujeres' leeward shores. They had traveled from Cuba in search of new lands and slaves to work in the mines of the island. To their dismay, the Spaniards found only aging clay statues, which they imagined to be graven images of women-their guess was not far off. According to those who know, Isla Mujeres-like its larger sister island, Cozumel-was held sacred by the ancient Maya, who traveled from the mainland to leave offerings for Ixchel, the goddess of fertility.

Following this less-than-dramatic discovery, the island became a popular way station for pirates during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Isla Mujeres eventually turned into a fishing village, and gradually has become a Mecca for sun-seekers in search of an idyllic seaside place to relax.

All shuttles land at Isla's municipal dock, centered in what can only be described as a "quaint, rustic, fishing town." On the waterfront, beside the dock, local fishing cooperative offices and dive shops advertise sport fishing, cruises in the bay or to the bird sanctuary on Isla Contoy.

There are small wooden trailers next to the dock, which sell seafood cocktails, and offer what is possibly the world's best ceviche de caracol (marinated conch), served in a lime, chopped onion, tomato, chile and cilantro base. Though seafood is Isla's specialty, good Mexican, international and Yucatecan specialty restaurants can also be found.

Many visitors come to Isla Mujeres just to shop. It is internationally renowned for its fine jewelry: diamonds, emeralds and rubies are crafted into beautiful creations right on the premises. There are also hammocks and clothing here for the buying.

Down the main street are several shops renting mopeds, bicycles and golf carts. Rental prices are reasonable and getting around is simple. There is a single road tracing an elliptical oval from north to south and self-guided tours are easy to achieve.

Just a short stroll north of town lies Isla's finest beach, Playa Norte (North Beach). In this idyllic spot, white sand meets turquoise Caribbean waters in a sultry kiss, and palm trees sway gently in the breeze while visitors snorkel, windsurf or simply catch some rays.

Whichever way you see it, a trip to Isla Mujeres is a fine respite from any seaside vacation, with its bounty of fabulous food, pristine beaches and simple pleasures.
